About online learning at CSUEB
Are CSUEB online degrees the same as on-campus degrees?
Yes. Online students complete the same coursework with the same faculty, and the diploma and transcript are identical. There's no notation distinguishing online from on-campus.
Are online courses synchronous (live) or asynchronous (on your time)?
Most online courses at CSUEB are asynchronous - you complete coursework on your schedule with weekly deadlines. Some programs and individual courses use synchronous Zoom sessions for discussion or simulation. Each course's syllabus tells you which.
Is online learning easier than on-campus?
No - online is flexible, not easier. The coursework is the same. Online courses often demand more self-direction since you don't have weekly in-person check-ins. Read our honest self-check guide to see if online fits your study habits.
Where are CSUEB online courses delivered?
All online courses are delivered through Canvas, the CSUEB learning management system. You'll log in to csueastbay.instructure.com with your CSUEB credentials.
Time commitment and schedule
How many hours per week should I expect to spend on a course?
Plan for about 9-12 hours per week per 3-unit course (the same expectation as on-campus). That includes reading, watching lectures, discussions, and assignments. Heavier weeks happen during midterms and finals.
Can I work full-time and complete a CSUEB online program?
Many of our students do. Most online programs offer part-time options (1-2 courses per semester) so you can balance work and studies. Talk to an Online Campus advisor about pacing for your specific program.
Do I need to be online at specific times?
For asynchronous courses, no - you log in on your schedule but must meet weekly deadlines. For courses with synchronous components (Zoom sessions), those have set meeting times listed in the course schedule.
How long does an online program take to complete?
Depends on the program and your enrollment status. Bachelor's completion programs can take 2-4 years; master's programs typically 1.5-2.5 years; teaching credentials 1-2 years. Each program page has its specific timeline.
Technology requirements
What computer/internet do I need?
A reliable broadband internet connection and a laptop or desktop with a current web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari). Tablets and phones can work for many activities but a full computer is recommended for assignments. Some courses may require additional software (specified in the syllabus).
What if I don't have a computer or reliable internet?
CSUEB has student loaner programs and free Wi-Fi resources for students who need them. Contact online@csueastbay.edu for current options.
Where do I get help with Canvas?
24/7 Canvas support is at 1-866-325-0853 - they can help with login issues, course access, file uploads, and more. For other technical issues submit a ticket at .
Academics and grades
How do online exams work?
Varies by course. Some use timed Canvas quizzes; some use Respondus LockDown Browser for proctoring; some use take-home alternative-format assessments (papers, projects). The course syllabus tells you what to expect.
How do I interact with my instructor?
Through Canvas messages, email, and instructor-held office hours (often via Zoom). Most instructors respond within 1-2 business days. Communication norms are spelled out in each course syllabus.
How are online courses graded?
The same grading scales and standards as on-campus courses. Your transcript looks identical regardless of whether you took the course online or in person.
Can I transfer credits from another school?
Yes - CSUEB accepts transfer credits from accredited institutions. The Office of Admissions evaluates your transcripts during the admissions process. Talk to an advisor about which credits transfer to your specific program.
Support and resources
Do online students get the same support as on-campus students?
Yes. Tutoring, library research, advising, mental health, accessibility services, and career services are all available to online students - typically delivered remotely via Zoom or chat. See the Students Hub for details.
Where do I go for academic advising?
Each program has assigned academic advisors. Online Campus advisors handle program-specific questions, while major advisors handle degree planning. Email online@csueastbay.edu if you're not sure who to contact.
Are accommodations available for students with disabilities?
Yes - CSUEB Accessibility Services works with online students the same as on-campus, providing accommodations like extended time on exams, captioning, screen reader compatibility, and assistive tech access.
Cost and financial aid
How much do online courses cost?
CSUEB online programs are charged at standard CSU rates. See the Admissions and Costs page for the current per-unit rate and total program estimates.
Am I eligible for financial aid?
Most online students are eligible for federal aid (FAFSA), state grants, and scholarships. File FAFSA early - the deadline is March 2 for California state aid priority consideration.
Does my employer reimburse online tuition?
Many employers offer tuition reimbursement for accredited programs - CSUEB online qualifies. Check with your HR department about your employer's policy, often called "tuition assistance" or "education benefits."
Career outcomes
Will employers see "online" on my degree?
No. Your degree, transcript, and diploma make no distinction between online and on-campus. CSUEB is the institution; the delivery mode isn't recorded.
How does CSUEB Career Services help online students?
Career Services offers resume reviews, interview prep, internship listings, and job postings - all available remotely to online students. Most appointments are via Zoom or in-person if you visit campus.
Can I do internships and fieldwork in an online program?
Yes. Many programs have internship or fieldwork requirements. CSUEB partners with local employers and organizations and helps online students arrange placements near where they live - whether that's the Bay Area, elsewhere in California, or out of state.
