Pioneer Internships Program

The Pioneer Internships Program (formerly known as the Community Service Internship Program (CSIP)) was initiated by Bruce and Marie Rosenblatt in 1992. Since inception, we have provided over 400 internships to ÍÑ¿ã°É Bay students to participate in community service while they attend school. The Pioneer Internships Program matches non-profit organizations with students desiring to gain experience in their intended career field.

Student Information - Summer 2026

Student Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate ÍÑ¿ã°É Bay student (full-time) with good academic standing.
  • Minimum GPA - 2.5 
  • Have continued full-time enrollment in a degree program during the Fall 26 term
  • Are authorized to work in the U.S. (e.g., H-4 visa holders ineligible, F-1s are eligible - check with CIE for questions)
  • Have a major/career interest related to the internship position 
  • Complete two reports after 75 hours of service during the internship
  • Assist in advertising PIP; become Ambassadors and share about their experience

Student Application & Selection Process:

  • Student applications are open February 1 - 28. 
  • Selected candidates will receive an invite for an interview with Career Services staff and/or the internship site - March
  • Placement approvals/denials are sent in April 
  • Interns must schedule an introduction meeting with the confirmed site in April/May
  • Selected interns are required to attend a Safety Orientation on Monday May 18th via zoom
  • Internship starts May/June and ends by the second week of August 

Award Information:

  • 15 internship opportunities available
  • Interested in academic credit? Meet with your major advisor to discuss qualifications 
  • Students complete 150 hours at an internship site and receive a stipend of $3000 
  • Awarded during the Fall 2026 term (must be enrolled full-time)
  • ÍÑ¿ã°É Bay is unable to provide funding in excess of student need. Need is determined by completing the FAFSA/CADAA.
  • The PIP stipend is awarded in accordance with a student's financial aid package.

The application for the Pioneer Internship Program will be available February 1, 2026.

Selected students experiencing financial hardship can apply for a travel stipend to help supplement travel costs during the summer. More details will be provided to students selected for the Pioneer Internship Program.

    Population Served: The mission of BOSS is to help homeless, poor, and disabled people achieve health and self-sufficiency, and to fight against the root causes of poverty and homelessness. BOSS develops solutions to mass homelessness, mass incarceration and community violence and is dedicated to the inclusion of people marginalized by addiction, trauma, criminality, incarceration, poverty, racism, sexism, homelessness and violence.     Population Served: Provide education to students (age 6-22) with developmental disabilities like autism spectrum disorder

    Internship Title: Administrative support intern

    Description of Duties: Organizing records & supplies; act as departmental liaison; assist with purchasing supplies and necessary resources for the school; assist with personnel recruitment and scheduling interviews with potential employment candidates; assist school event coordinators with special events. *Interns that are adept in computer science and data analytics may be asked to assist IT manager with troubleshooting technical issues and maintaining data information regarding student progress.

    Population Served: HIP Housing's mission is to invest in human potential by improving the housing and lives of people in San Mateo County. The agency has four housing programs: Housing Resource Hub, Home Sharing, Self-sufficiency and Housing Readiness, and also owns and manages over 500 units of low-income housing.

    Description of Duties: Conduct community outreach activities such as researching new opportunities, attending community events, contacting local businesses, faith communities, or service organizations to share information about HIP Housing, and other outreach-related tasks.

    Population Served: Lyrical Opposition is a community-based arts organization that uses lyricism to support youth development, creative expression, and positive social engagement. We provide songwriting, spoken word, and performance workshops that strengthen literacy, confidence, and communication skills in safe, inclusive spaces.

    We primarily serve youth and young adults from underserved communities, offering creative alternatives that encourage self-expression, critical thinking, and leadership. Through mentorship and community events, Lyrical Opposition empowers participants to use their voices constructively and build connections within their communities.

    Population Served: The San Leandro Community Food Pantry operates from rented space at Bethel Community. Our mission is to provide food to people who need it. We operate in mid-north San Leandro with our target clients coming from the local area (60% of our clients reside in 94577, 94578, and 94579 zip codes) although we welcome anyone from within Alameda County. Over 50% of our clients speak a language other than English.

    We are an active member of the Alameda County Community Food Bank and participate in the Emergency Food Assistance Program which is part of the USDA. Our main program is our food distribution on Thursday evenings. We also operate a satellite food distribution program in partnership with April Showers providing Ready To Eat (RTE) 10lbs food bags to homeless clients two or three times per month.

    Internship Title: Registration and Database support

    Description of Duties: Main tasks would support our project to update our client profiles in our online database. Many profiles are outdated and need profile pictures taken.

    • Support clients to complete or update registration form
    • Enter completed registration forms into database and upload photo
    • Export client data from database to create pre-fill registration forms

    Population Served: Scientific Adventures for Girls teaches after school STEM to elementary school girls in Title I schools. Our purpose is to ensure all girls in the East Bay, especially those from marginalized communities, have opportunities to benefit from STEM. SAfG serves girls in elementary schools in transitional kindergarten through 6th grade in Oakland, Richmond, San Pablo, El Sobrante, Emeryville and Berkeley, California. The majority of our students are girls of color, predominantly Latina (49%) and Black (34%). Approximately 85%+ of the children served are eligible for the Free and Reduced-Priced Lunch program, the proxy used for socio-economic status.

    We also teach a 5-week summer camp that serves all students in this space.

    Internship Title: HR and Operations Intern

    Description of Duties: Support both HR and Operations with 3 Main Projects: 1) Review and Update Process docs, Workflows, and SOPs to ensure consistency and accuracy, 2) Update Insightly CRM with donor information, and 3) update and finalize documents for onboarding / off-boarding for staff, volunteers, near peers and consultants

    The Court shall fairly and efficiently resolve disputes arising under the law and shall apply the law consistently, impartially, and independently to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitutions of California and the United States.     Internship Title: IT Intern

    Description of Duties: The Alameda County Superior Court’s Office of Information Technology is seeking motivated and detail-oriented interns to join the Infrastructure Team and/or the Client Services Team. This internship provides hands-on experience in a dynamic IT environment supporting critical court operations. Interns will gain exposure to enterprise-level systems, modern IT practices, device management, networking, security, end-user support, and public sector technology services while contributing to real operational improvements.

    Infrastructure Team – Examples of Assignments

    • Server Creation & Administration – Assist with provisioning, maintaining, and securing Windows/Linux servers. Participate in system upgrades and patching cycles. Help with troubleshooting server related issues.
    • Infrastructure Administration - Perform various infrastructure tasks and assist with projects under the guidance of infrastructure team members
    • Network Design & Administration - Help troubleshoot connectivity issues, VPN problems, and authentication errors; assist with monitoring switches, wireless access points, and firewalls.
    • Network Documentation - Trace cabling, identify ports, and update network diagrams and documentation.
    • Security & Compliance – Participate in security initiatives, including system hardening, patch management, and compliance-related activities.

    Client Services Team – Examples of Assignments

    • Desktop Support & Help Desk – Provide first- and second-tier technical assistance to court employees and judicial officers, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and peripheral issues.
    • Azure Active Directory (AzureAD) – Assist with tasks related to identity management, group policies, and authentication services.
    • Intune Administration – Support mobile device management, application deployment, and endpoint security policy enforcement.
    • Documentation - Contribute to user guides, training materials, and process improvement documentation
    • User Administration - Assist with account provisioning, permissions management, and onboarding/offboarding tasks.
    • Device Deployment - Support technology rollouts, asset management, and inventory tracking; assist with imaging and deploying Windows devices using the Microsoft Deployment Tool and other enterprise platforms.

    Population Served: We provide essential social services to individuals and families in need. Our programs include food assistance, emergency support, youth and senior programs, seasonal holiday assistance, back-to-school assistance and low-cost Summer Day Camp. We serve low-income, homeless and vulnerable populations throughout the Tri-Cities area, offering hope and practical help without discrimination.

    Internship Title: Summer Day Camp Coordinator / Music Teacher

    Description of Duties: Interns manage the student volunteers and staff of Summer Day Camp to ensure the smooth running of all camp activities, as well as participate as a music teacher.

    Population Served: We serve low income clients everyday from Monday thru Friday. Our Marketplace and Drive-Thru program is designed to serve approximately 1,500 families a week.

    This program's success is driven by our dedicated volunteers, who tirelessly sort donations, check-in and distribute food. Their hard work and commitment ensures that our organization operates smoothly, creating a clean and welcoming environment where families can find nourishment and sustenance they need with respect and dignity.

    Internship Title: Social Media and Client Intake Technician

    Description of Duties: The technician will be helping our staff with social media postings and graphics, help when needed with client intake and should be ready to assist us wherever we need help with running the food bank.

    Population Served: WCRC serves traditionally medically underserved populations, primarily women and non-binary people diagnosed with cancer, and their loved ones and caregivers, who reside in Alameda or Contra Costa counties. Programs and services include Patient Navigation, Support Groups, Wellness classes, Information & Resource Referral, Financial Assistance, Psychotherapy. All programs and services are provided free of charge.

    Internship Title: Help Desk Intern

    Description of Duties: The WCRC Helpdesk internship is an in-person only opportunity. The internship offers interaction with the general public, clients, volunteers and staff through in-person, phone and virtual contact. An important part of what the intern will do is to field phone inquiries, providing information & referrals to local and regional resources to clients and to the general public, facilitating access to WCRC and other services.

    This internship is an excellent opportunity for an intern to be engaged with several WCRC programs and services to see how they work together to serve WCRC’s clients and community. The intern will become conversant in WCRC’s programs and services and will develop a solid understanding of relevant external local health and wellness resources available for underserved populations. The internship can be combined with other in-office duties, e.g., Wellness Program Host, Patient Navigation Volunteer to provide needed weekly hours.

    Helpdesk Duties include the following:

    • Responding to information and referral requests from the public. Typical calls include requests for information about cancer-related services and programs, e.g., where to find resources for medical information, mental health support, financial assistance, housing and food support, transportation, legal assistance, etc. Skills required include on-line research to confirm and identify resources and support that is requested by callers as well as willingness to learn and become well-versed in WCRC’s programs and services and how to make referrals to WCRC or external programs as appropriate.
    • Resolving inquiries. This requires attention to detail, including resolving and/or advancing to the next step, calls/requests/inquiries received by determining eligibility/screening for programs, forwarding messages to appropriate staff, documenting calls thoroughly and indicating the need for any follow up so that subsequent volunteers or staff will be able to follow up. Inquiries can be addressed through reviewing the WCRC Resource spreadsheet, online searches, consulting staff.
    • Maintaining the WCRC Resource spreadsheet. As requested, adding and updating relevant resources to the spreadsheet, which is the first stop in addressing a resource referral question.
    • Conducting General Client Intakes. This online form is required to access any of WCRC’s services, all of which are provided free of charge. The form includes a number of demographic and health-related questions so that WCRC can best serve its clients.
    • Providing research and referral and other support to WCRC’s Multi-cultural Community-based Navigators.
    • The intern would be a public-facing contact for WCRC during their shifts in the office. This includes phone contact as well as in-person contact with drop-in visitors, clients with appointments, deliveries, etc.

    Financial Assistance (FA) Fund program duties include:

    • Making calls in support of WCRC’s Financial Assistance (FA) Program by making follow-up calls to verify the checks were received and to ask if the client is interested in other WCRC services. If the client is interested, the intern would describe WCRC’s programs and services and refer to staff for any additional follow up needed.
    • Logging calls in FA spreadsheet, with notes.

    Other Project and Administrative Duties, as needed:

    • Contacting WCRC clients to offer participation in collaborative programs, e.g., Unite For Her (free complementary treatments); Bay Area Cancer Connections (scheduling appointments for free wigs, protheses, hats, scarves, etc.).
    • Signing up clients for WCRC Wellness Workshops.
    • Administrative projects, e.g., mailings, on-line research, client satisfaction survey calls, organizing, etc.
    • Outreach support: preparing, organizing outreach literature and materials for tabling events.
