The Department of Mathematics is striving to operationalize our commitment to Access, Equity, Flexibility and Community. We are dedicated to creating equitable, inclusive, anti-racist spaces for students to grow, learn, and flourish as mathematical thinkers. We encourage all members of our community to engage in this ongoing work.
Mathematics is an intriguing, interesting and beautiful subject. It is also challenging and rigorous. Students are drawn to mathematics because of its clarity and the joy of discovering solutions to difficult problems. The Department of Mathematics offers strong Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees that include a variety of courses intended to prepare students for a career in any mathematics related field or other areas that value quantitative and problem-solving skills. The program allows flexibility in breadth and depth where students can choose among courses with applied and pure emphases. The faculty are committed to creating a welcoming environment and providing opportunities for all students to explore mathematics within and beyond the classroom.
Thanks to a generous member of our East Bay math community, a group of undergraduate and graduate students were able to participate in MAA MathFest 2025. Lots of fun was had!
The Rosemary and Matthew Spitzer Distinguished Science Faculty Award is given once a year to a faculty member in the college who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. Year after year, Dr. Arauza Rivera continues to find meaningful ways to infuse joy, community, and justice into both her teaching and research. Congrats Dr. Arauza Rivera, we appreciate you!
The Outstanding Lecturer award went to Tu Hoang, who has taught in Mathematics and Statistics. A student comment sums up why, “Mr. Tu is an outstanding teacher. He's involved and cares about the learning outcomes of his students. I felt engaged and I gained valuable skills that I'll be able to retain thanks to Mr. Tu.” Tu completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mathematics at CSUEB. He started his teaching journey as a graduate teaching assistant in 2018. After earning his degree in 2019, he was able to join the faculty as a lecturer. Congrats Tu, we appreciate you!
