Welcome to the College of Science at ÍÑ¿ã°É Bay!

I am Dr. Carmen Bustos‑Works, a first-generation college graduate raised in the Bay Area and an alumna of San Francisco State University (Chemistry and Psychology). I am honored to lead a college community dedicated to advancing science that is inclusive, innovative, and impactful.

Our students, faculty, and staff bring brilliance and heart to everything they do, from hands-on research and high-impact teaching to community partnerships that make a difference in the East Bay and create meaningful change in the world.

I know firsthand how transformative education can be for students and their families. My own academic journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to fairness, access, and academic excellence. I am excited to use my lived experiences to support our shared work in creating learning environments where all students feel a sense of belonging and can thrive.

Welcome to our vibrant community. I look forward to connecting.

It is my honor to be part of the College of Science community! As a Professor and Chair of Psychology, supporting students and helping them navigate their university and post-graduation careers has been a deeply fulfilling part of my own career. I received my BS in Biology-Psychology from the University of New Brunswick, my MS in Behavioral Neuroscience from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and my Ph.D. in Psychology from Cardiff University. In my view as an educator, the goal is always to instill a passion for lifelong learning, to develop students into discerning consumers of information, and to prepare them to make meaningful contributions to their communities. I’m excited to continue supporting this aim more broadly for the College in the role of Interim Associate Dean for Student Success.

As Associate Dean of Operations, I am committed to supporting the students, staff, and faculty of the College of Science. My own educational journey was shaped by dedicated faculty mentors, transformative learning experiences, and institutions focused on ensuring student success. As a professor of Biological Science, department chair, and now associate dean, I strive to ensure that ÍÑ¿ã°É Bay students have access to the same types of meaningful opportunities and support that had such a lasting impact on my education. I grew up in the East Bay and received my bachelor’s and MS degrees in Ecology and Systematic Biology from San Francisco State University, and my Ph.D. in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University.
